Life is a constant struggle with many ups and downs and no one is an exception to this rule, not even you. You cannot control or choose the challenges sent your way, but what you can and must change is your own thought process which is the main culprit behind most of your emotional and mental ailments. It is not the situation itself but your reaction to it that determines what type of person you are. Are you a victim of your own making or a survivor who refuses to give up and surrender to the pain be it physical or mental? For example, say you accidentally injure yourself while exercising. What will be your reaction to such an event? Will you take it in stride and go back to following your routine exercise regimen or will you linger on the pain and use your physical injury as an excuse to doubt yourself and quit exercising? It should be obvious to you what the logical choice in this case ought to be, but that does not mean you will make the rational choice and the reason behind such a turn of events will no doubt be a negative thought process which is like a disease that afflicts so many people.
Instead of finding ways to alleviate their suffering most people have a tendency to do the exact opposite. They compound their problems and increase their own emotional pain whether knowingly or not due to their faulty thought process. Your mind is a powerful tool if used wisely but can also become your enemy if you let it. Therefore, you need to be able to effectively communicate with yourself for it is you yourself with the aid of your thoughts that is responsible for the emotional turmoil inside you and no one else.
Everyone has to face many setbacks in their lives. For instance, you might get fired and as such lose your very livelihood. You might fall sick and be diagnosed with a life threatening disease like cancer or even worse aids. You might be passed over for the promotion which you thought was rightfully yours and be stuck in a dead end job that you would rather quit but can’t because you do not have any other prospects at the moment. You want to go on a vacation with your family but you are not able to afford the travel expenses. Therefore, you start viewing yourself as a failure and sink into depression. However, it is not the situation which in itself is to blame for your depression but your own incorrect way of thinking. You allow your thoughts to negate your reasoning capacity and develop a distorted view of yourself which hinders you from living a happy life. When you start blaming your circumstances for everything that is wrong in your life and start playing the victim you know you are in trouble. When you turn your back on any offered help and ignore all valuable pieces of advice, it is then that you have truly hit rock bottom. However, you can console yourself by knowing that there is only one way from there on and that is up.
You can go to a therapist or a healer, but what they will try to make you realize is that the answer to all your emotional maladies lies within you. You are the only one who has the power to change the course of your life by changing your thoughts, your attitude and this can be done by looking within you because that is where the source of your emotional problems lies. You need to learn how to correctly communicate with yourself because the way you talk to yourself when confronted with a situation defines whether you will be able to alleviate your suffering or drown in your own mind made ocean of depression. Repairing the damage that you do to yourself is a gradual process which takes both time and sustained effort on your part. There is no miracle cure or easy fix which will heal all your emotional cuts and bruises.
Pain is a constant in life be it physical or emotional. Everyone has dealt with or is dealing with it just like you and that means you are not alone. You can choose to be overwhelmed by this pain and drown under the weight of it or you can decide to fight it. Always remember that you are the only one who can truly heal yourself.
